Yes the West Pier burnt a few years back (can't quite remember when), there are some suspicious stories out there about the cause.  Burnt and destroyed pieces of it appeared on Ebay (!).

		<description>Thanks for the great write-up! Indeed, the book is definitely not targeted at web-savvy types like yourself. It's definitely for marketers who know a little about blogs or RSS, but that's all. And, as the saying goes, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

On a totally unrelated note, I see you're from Brighton. I was there about four years ago, and took some photos of the awesome, decrepit pier:
