@Leif having kids in the nearby doesn't mean they'll be screaming down the house/building.

Schools are an environment that do not reflect the real world. Kids/people would be much more educated if they experienced real world environments.

@Matthew I'm interested in finding out more about the work/education place you mentioned. How do I find out more?

Some it sounds lovely, but some of it sounds like a nightmare. Trying to work with the kids nearby? Would we have sound-proof screens? Perhaps it's because this is a new idea to me, but it doesn't sound immediately attractive. I think the Werks is many of the things you want, just without the kids.

As to your last statement about how life used to be -have you ever read anything by John Taylor Gatto? I'd recommend "Weapons of Mass Instruction."

Yes, it was how life used to be. And it still can be.

If memory serves, this is exactly how the last chapter of peopleware (1st edition?) ends. The authors discuss a worksplace that also has a day-care enter and elementary school on-site. At 2:00PM every day, the school has a parade through the entire workplace.

It may not give them a higher rating on the CMM or a Advanced Test Manager certificate, but whatever person had the idea for the school, and the executives and managers that supported it through all the stupid legal and contract issues - those people positively and materially impacted the workplace. (Decreased turnover, better able to attract and retain talent, internal motivation, company loyalty ...)

And, thirty years later, at retirement time, when they look back at their accomplishments, I can guess what some of them were most proud of.

You want to do that too? I salute you! (We homeschool and I work from home, but it's not the same. You're talking about building community. I am impressed.)
